I liked this egg-timer at first - it is stainless steel afterall and fit in with the kitchen, was big enough to be easily found, is just a loud enough clicking to be aware of, and has a gentle but loud-enough ding-ding-ding ring.
The (Your) buck stops with the looks, however.
Just pull off the top (just pull it straight up) and you'll see why. There are a lot of little gears in there, which is how it should be on a mechanical device. What shouldn't be though, is how the twist-timing gear is designed. The gear that controls the twist and torsion of the egg, and how far you can twist it, is held down with a little o-ring just barely pushed down over the tip of a SOFT plastic axle. There is no pin holding it in place, no screw, its just barely pushed down over the tip of the exposed axle.
Once that ring pops off, which it obviously will, it's a real bear to figure out where and at what rotation to put the gears back. When you twist it again after fixing it, the egg may not time for the full 60minute rotation, and has a full ring if any ring at completion. I'm not stupid, but I had to scratch my head figuring it out.
When I did fix it, it only lasted 2 days, because the little ring that holds the torsion gear down comes off the soft plastic axle more and more easily.
If that didnt convince you; the spring that applies the rotation (and makes it count backwards) is very very fine, there is no way it will keep accurate time for long at that strength.
Oh well, kids can play ball with it now or something. That's about how useful the designing Engineers ensured it would end up.
